A Critical Access Hospital, or CAH, is a designation created to support small, rural hospitals that meet specific criteria, including limited bed count, location requirements relative to other hospitals, and average length of stay limits. CAH Eligibility Requirements
- No more than 25 inpatient beds
- Located more than 35 miles from another hospital, or meeting a state-designated necessary provider exception
- Average annual inpatient length of stay of 96 hours or less
- Provides 24-hour emergency care services
Reimbursement Methodology
Unlike standard acute care hospitals paid under the prospective payment systems, CAHs are generally reimbursed based on reasonable cost, meaning Medicare pays a percentage of the CAH's actual allowable costs for providing services, rather than a fixed predetermined rate per case. Swing Bed Services
