The Purpose of a Healthcare Dashboard

A dashboard consolidates key performance indicators into a single view, allowing decision-makers to monitor organizational health at a glance. Effective dashboard design is a practical analytics skill tested on the RHIA exam, since HIM professionals often build or maintain these tools for administrators and quality teams.

Identifying the Right Metrics

Before building a dashboard, analysts must determine the audience and purpose. An executive dashboard might track high-level metrics such as overall patient satisfaction and net revenue, while a departmental dashboard might track specific process measures such as chart completion rates or coding turnaround time.

  • Limit dashboards to the vital few metrics rather than every available data point.
  • Ensure each metric has a clear owner responsible for the underlying data.
  • Include context, such as targets or historical trends, alongside current values.

Layout and Visual Hierarchy

Effective dashboards place the most important metrics in the upper left, where the eye naturally lands first. Related metrics should be grouped together, and consistent color schemes should indicate status, such as green for on target and red for below target. Avoid overcrowding a single screen with too many visual elements.

Types of Dashboard Displays

  1. Scorecards, which show performance against specific targets using simple indicators.
  2. Trend charts, which display metric performance over time.
  3. Gauges, which show a single value relative to a range.

The appropriate refresh rate depends on how quickly the underlying process changes and how the data will be used for decision-making.

Dashboards are only as trustworthy as the data behind them. Establishing clear data definitions, validation processes, and a single source of truth prevents confusion when different departments report conflicting numbers for what should be the same metric.
