Why Statistics Matter
Healthcare statistics form a heavily calculation based portion of the RHIA exam. Candidates must be comfortable computing common rates and averages from raw facility data, since these statistics drive quality reporting, resource planning, and reimbursement analysis.
Census and Inpatient Service Day
The daily inpatient census is the number of patients present at a specific census taking time, typically midnight. An inpatient service day represents the services received by one inpatient during one twenty four hour period. These two figures form the basis for most other calculations.
Average Length of Stay
Average length of stay is calculated by dividing total length of stay for all discharged patients by the total number of discharges during the same period. This statistic is closely watched because a rising average length of stay may signal complications, inefficiency, or a shift in patient acuity.
Bed Occupancy Rate
The bed occupancy rate, or percentage of occupancy, is calculated by dividing the total number of inpatient service days by the total number of bed count days available during the period, multiplied by one hundred. This tells administrators how efficiently bed capacity is being used.
Mortality and Autopsy Rates
The gross death rate divides total inpatient deaths by total discharges, including deaths. The net death rate excludes deaths occurring within forty eight hours of admission from both numerator and denominator, since such rapid deaths are less reflective of care quality at that facility. The autopsy rate divides the number of autopsies performed on inpatient deaths by the total number of inpatient deaths.
Infection and Complication Rates
Hospital acquired infection rates divide the number of infections acquired during the stay by total discharges, expressed as a percentage. Postoperative infection rates use a similar structure limited to surgical patients. These rates are heavily used in quality reporting and value based purchasing programs.
Common Calculation Pitfalls
Exam takers frequently miss questions by using the wrong denominator, such as using total discharges instead of total deaths for the autopsy rate, or failing to exclude deaths under forty eight hours for the net death rate. Always identify exactly what population the denominator should represent before calculating.

Practice each formula with sample numbers until the calculation becomes automatic, since the exam typically embeds these formulas inside word problems rather than asking for a definition alone.
