As the calendar year winds down, it is a good time for RHIA candidates to consolidate revenue cycle concepts studied throughout the year into a single review framework. Revenue cycle management spans the entire patient encounter, from scheduling through final payment posting.
The Revenue Cycle Phases
- Pre-service: scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorization, and financial counseling
- Point of service: registration accuracy, charge capture, and point-of-service collections
- Coding and billing: code assignment, chargemaster application, and claim scrubbing
- Post-service: claim submission, denial management, payment posting, and accounts receivable follow-up
Key Concepts to Review
- MS-DRG and APC payment logic, including relative weights and status indicators
- Chargemaster structure and governance
- CDI query compliance and CC/MCC capture
- POA indicator assignment and HAC implications
- Denial categories and root-cause analytics
- KPIs such as days in AR, clean claim rate, and denial rate
- Compliance frameworks including the OIG work plan and False Claims Act exposure
Connecting Coding to Financial Outcomes
A recurring exam theme is the link between accurate, compliant coding and appropriate reimbursement. Candidates should be comfortable explaining how a single documentation gap can ripple through CC/MCC capture, DRG assignment, CMI, and ultimately hospital revenue and quality reporting.

- Work through practice calculations for CMI, denial rate, and days in AR until they are automatic
- Review sample claims to practice identifying status indicators and payment logic
